Gary Illyes, Google Webmaster trends analyst spoke to the audience about the Mobile-first index’s rollout at the SMX East conference in NYC. He also said that the implementation will be slow and on a few sites.
Its implementation came as a surprise since it was not expected to roll out until the end of this year but the positive test result encouraged Google to make this move early.
Google has defined classifiers to know if a site is ready for a mobile-first index. Their work is to determine equality and comparability of mobile and desktop sites when it comes to links, schema, etc.
Gary also said that Google has rolled out a mobile-first index to only a few sites on purpose to test it better.
